Bristol's
Broadmead First UK City Centre to Implement Wi-Fi
First city wireless hotspot
goes live today
Lydbrook,
Gloucestershire, UK, 13 August 2004
- Bristol's central shopping area,
Broadmead has gone live today with its implementation
of a KooKu wi-fi hotspot, enabling anyone to access
their emails and the internet from laptops and PDAs
without cables.
The centre is the first
public area in the country to make a wireless computer
network available to anyone with wireless hardware,
without the need to enter a hotel, bar or café.
, Behind this new development are KooKu, a provider
of fully secure of wi-fi hotspot solutions and Bristol-based
SoVision, part of Line International. SoVision has installed
secure hardware and software, including a virtual payment
platform, ADSL connection and is taking responsibility
for the content of the login screen.
For the next month, the
service will be available to everyone free of charge.
After that time, users will pay as they go, using a
newly developed payment system from KooKu. The new system
allows everyone to buy units of time, but rather than
having to sacrifice it if a user logs off before the
time limit, it allows them to carry the credit with
them.
John Hirst, Broadmead
manager enthused: "We are really proud to be the
first in the UK to install a wi-fi hotspot in the heart
of a city centre. After SoVision had shown me what was
possible, I kept wondering why no-one else had thought
of this before. Using it in the Broadmead environment
fits perfectly with our European culture of coffee shop
meetings."
Brian Carpenter, managing
director of Line International said: "Providing
the ability to walk into an area and simply log onto
the internet or access emails, makes this an exciting
technology application. We have worked hard to develop
this solution with KooKu to ensure that it is simple
to use and extremely secure. Based on our experience,
we are confident that this service will be invaluable
to people either living or visiting the area."
With its high profile,
internet security is at the forefront of everyone's
mind when using this type of technology. Kooku has taken
a number of measures to ensure that each person can
use the Broadmead wi-fi with confidence. They are:
- Each users name and password is
unique
- There is no way to log on to another
user
- It is not possible to hack into
the central hardware
KooKu, responsible for
the development of the WiFi system has teamed with SoVision
to test the security, which has proved itself time and
time again. Jeff Martin, sales director of KooKu said:
"The KooKu system is proving itself time and time
again, with its high level of security, ease of use
by customers and its adaptability allowing it to be
deployed in a variety of different locations with equal
success, we are pleased to be part of this ground breaking
solution."
