Surfing with KooKu

  • Open your web browser and you will be redirected to the KooKu login page.
  • If you have a KooKu username and password simply enter them into the spaces provided and click "login". If not, you should be able to buy KooKu cards at the venue or purchase the cards online with your credit or debit card.
  • If you are unable to locate the KooKu login page, please click here.
  • You are now connected to the Internet.

If you have problems please read the following:

Connecting to KooKu SSID

  • Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections

  • Right-click on Wireless Network Connection and go to Properties

  • Click on the Wireless Networks tab

  • Make sure that "KooKu" appears in the list of available networks.

  • Ensure that the WEP enabled option is not selected. This can be done by click on the clicking button.

Obtaining an IP Address automatically

  • Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections

  • Right-click on Wireless Network Connection and go to Properties

  • Click on the General tab, then click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) followed by Properties

  • Select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" and click OK.

Turn Off Proxy servers on Internet Explorer

  • Open your browser and go to the Tools menu

  • Select Internet Options and go to the Connections tab

  • Click LAN Settings
    • Make sure the following are not selected:
    • Automatically detect settings
    • Use automatic configuration script
    • Use a proxy server for your LAN

General

Do I have a wirelessly enabled laptop?
Many laptops now have wireless technology built-in. Look for a Centrino logo on your PC. Other PC's might have PCMCIA wireless cards. If you have an Apple Mac you will require an Airport card.

How do I install my wireless card?
Please refer to the manual for your specific card of instructions on how it is installed.

How can I tell if I'm within range of a KooKu hotspot?
The software for your wireless card should list the SSID of all hotspots within range. If you are in range of a KooKu hotspot you will find an SSID called 'KooKu'. Look out for the KooKu logo in all establishments that have KooKu hotspots.

Network

My laptop is configured for a static IP address
Please change your settings to use DHCP. This can be done by changing your TCP/IP properties to "Obtain IP address automatically" on Windows and by changing your TCP/IP settings on an Apple Mac to "Use DHCP".

I don't get an IP address when I connect to KooKu (or my IP address is 169.*.*.*)
Refresh your IP address settings - this can be done by typing ipconfig /renew at the command prompt in Windows or by clicking on the refresh button under TCP/IP settings on a Mac.

I have an IP address but can't see any websites
Please ensure that your DNS or Name server settings are correct. DNS information should be collected dynamically from the KooKu hotspot.

I can't see the login screen
This could result from a number of problems:
1) Please check you are in range of a KooKu hotspot.
2) Make sure you IP settings are correct.
3) Ensure that you browser isn't configured to "Work Offline"

WARNING: Please consult your IT department before making changes to your IP settings. KooKu cannot be held responsible for any problems that occur.

I can't see a KooKu hotspot
Please ensure that you are in range of a KooKu hotspot and that you have your wireless card enabled.

I have poor signal strength
You might be on the edge of the KooKu hotspot's range, ask a member of staff where the hotspots are located and try again when closer to them.

My connection keeps on dropping
See the above answer.

Card Issues

I can't log on!
Please ensure that your card is valid and that you are connected to a KooKu hotspot. The usernames and passwords are case sensitive.

I can't log off!
If you wish to logoff but have closed the logoff window go to the following address in your browser: http://1.1.1.1/logoff.

How much time do I have left on my card?
To find out how much time you have left on your card go to the following address: http://1.1.1.1/status

My time keeps running out
Time flies when you're online. Try to ensure that you logoff after each use, this will maximise your time online.

I've lost my card - what should I do?
Unfortunately KooKu cannot be held responsible for the loss of any cards.

Application

I can't send/receive emails
Should you have problems sending or receiving emails on a KooKu hotspot, ensure that all your email settings are correct and that your email server does not block external requests.

I'm having problems browsing
If you have successfully logged onto the KooKu network and have been able to browse the internet but are now having problems, check that you are still in range of a KooKu hotspot. Should the problem persists, report the issue to your IT department.

I can't connect to my home/corporate network over my VPN
The KooKu network has been fully tested with many of the main VPN packages. In the unlikely event that you have difficulties running a VPN over KooKu, please discuss the issue with your IT department.
